FUALAL JANE ODUBU MBChB [Mak], M. MED [Mak], FCS [ECSA], Dip. HLM[UAHEB]
Dr. Jane Fualal after her MBChB [1986-90], she went through internship [1990-1] at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor, a high-volume center in Northern Uganda. On completion, she was posted and moved to another district and worked as a medical officer [1991-3] in a Regional Referral Hospital. She applied for and did Master of Medicine in surgery at Makerere University [1993-6]. She has been working at Mulago National Referral and Teaching Hospital since July 1996 and has ascended the ranks in the Health Services of the Republic of Uganda from Medical Officer Special Grade to Consultant and Senior Consultant Surgeon. Currently she is the Head of the Breast and Endocrine Unit at the Hospital, a unit which she pioneered.
She has performed over 20,000 major surgeries over the 26years work experience as a surgeon with excellent results and has taught, supervised and examined medical students since 1997.Her passion is in quality Clinical Practice with special interest Breast and Endocrine Surgery. I still perform some general surgeries. In addition to this, I have participated in a number of seminars in Education and Leadership in Surgery. I have also taken many trainings for personal development within and outside the African continent.
Being a Rotarian, I am involved in various voluntary activities from church, schools, Prison, medical and surgical outreaches and SACCOs. To keep abreast with colleagues, she is a member of various Associations including Uganda Medical Association, Association of Surgeons of Uganda, COSECSA, international Association of Endocrine Surgeons, Uganda Endocrinology. I was the first Female President of the Association of Surgeons of Uganda.
Dr. Fualal has been a key contributor to the health service in Uganda as member/Chair in various committees of the hospital and at National level as Member National Advisory Committee on Medical Equipment, Chairperson Uganda Medical Board, technical person at the Health Service Commission interviews, University Councils and interview Panels.She has been Awarded; Model of Excellence by FAWE-U [2003]; Vocational Award for Community work by Rotary Club of Port Bell [2014]; The Independence Medal a Presidential Award by Uganda Government for exemplary work.
She has over 20 publications on various topics in surgery and made several presentations at scientific meeting.
She has been an accredited examiner in COSECSA since 2005 and has had the chance to be an external examiner in West Africa College of Surgeons, College of Medicine of South Africa and Uganda Martyrs University.
She has /supervised and internally examined over 20 dissertations. For many years she have been part of the working group in creating and revising treatment guidelines for Breast, oesophagus, prostate, stomach and cervix.
She likes nature as in gardening, tree planting and animal farming.
She is the incoming and First female president of College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa, COSECSA and we are so proud of her!!
