The first WISA Board was elected on 2 December 2015 at the COSECSA AGM in Blantyre Malawi.

ROLES
WiSA is comprised of the following positions:
WiSA Patron:
The WiSA Patron is the COSECSA Gender Focal Person. The WiSA Patron will report to the COSECSA Executive and provide support to the WiSA Chairperson.
WiSA Board:
The Board is comprised of the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer. With the exception of the Chairperson, all Board Members must serve a term of one year, with the option to continue for a further year if invited.
Chairperson:
The Chairperson shall serve as chair and preside at all meetings of WiSA. These meetings will be convened tri-annually and at such other times as deemed proper. During these meetings, the Chairperson shall communicate to the members such matters and make such suggestions that will promote the welfare and further the goals of WiSA. The Chairperson shall perform such other duties as are necessary incident to their office or as may be prescribed by the Board. The Chairperson shall communicate directly with the WiSA Patron on a monthly basis and provide an annual report to the COSECSA Executive at the COSECSA Annual General Meeting (AGM). The Chairperson oversees the WiSA Board of Management and the Chapter Coordinator/Leaders. The Chairperson is elected for a term of one year with the option to extend to a two year term. The Chairperson can hold office for one two year term.
Vice Chairperson:
In the absence or incapacitation of the Chairperson, the Vice Chairperson shall perform the duties of the Chairperson and when so doing, shall have all the powers of and be subject to all the restrictions upon the Chairperson. The Vice Chairperson shall perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the Chairperson and/or WiSA Board.
Registrar:
Dr Busi Mlambo is a Registrar in General Surgery at the University of Zimbabwe. She holds a Bachelor’s in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics and Biochemistry from the University of Maryland in the United States and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from The University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Dr Busi Mlambo’s interests are in Surgical Oncology and Minimally Invasive Surgery. She is a proud member of WISA and passionate about playing her part in empowering Women in Surgery
Secretary:
The Secretary shall be responsible for the proper mailing of notices to members, and the proper recording of proceedings of meetings of WiSA and the Board. The Secretary shall execute all orders, votes and resolutions, keep the stamp of WiSA and see that accurate records are kept of all members. Such duties of the secretary as may be specified by the Board may be delegated to the Vice Chairperson.The Secretary shall also perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the Chairperson or the Board.
Treasurer:
The Treasurer shall see that accurate financial records are kept, shall have established proper accounting procedures for the handling of WiSA funds. The treasurer shall report on the financial condition of WiSA on a monthly basis to the Chairperson. Such duties of the Treasurer as may be specified by the WiSA Board and may be delegated to the Vice Chairperson. The Treasurer shall also perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the Chairperson or the Board.
Chapter Coordinator/ Chapter Leaders:
The Chairperson reserves the right to approve chapter formation and chapter names. A Chapter Coordinator will be appointed to manage this process.
Each chapter must clearly identify itself as a chapter of WiSA, either as part of its chapter name or by stating it is “A chapter of WiSA.” A chapter will have a minimum of three (3) members with no limit on the maximum number of members. Each chapter must elect a minimum of two (2) Officers. Primary and Secondary Officers must be members of WiSA. Chapter meetings will support the mission and goals of WiSA. Annual reports along with a complete list of all chapter members must be supplied WiSA Board.
